Fireball Basic Web Skills (Part 5): Uploading Files To Your Website

Overall RatingNo Ratings

FTP (file transfer protocol) helps you in uploading your site quickly and setting permissions to your files and folders. Some hosts provide an online file manager, which you can access directly from your account control panel (CPanel). Make sure that your host allows more than one FTP account.

This will help you if you need to hire someone to maintain your website. Having more than one FTP account allows you to create a separate account for him rather than sharing your login details.

To upload files to your website you can use the ftp account that is included in your hosting package or you can use an ftp program. If you use an ftp program you will have more flexibility.

Your hosting ftp may have a limit on the size of the files you can upload. An ftp program will allow you to upload any size file and you will be able to see exactly what files you are working with.

(Screenshot coming soon!)

The screenshot above shows an example of what an ftp program looks like. The folders/files on the left are the folders/files on your computer. The folders/files on the right are the folders/files on your website. I have included a how to use ftp report and a video on uploading files on the bonus resource page.
